Soundbrenner Core 2: Your Practice Partner, Not Just a Metronome
Hey everyone, Brendan here from Brendanjonesdrums.com! You've probably seen the Soundbrenner Core 2 popping up all over your feeds – it's the sleek, wearable metronome that promises to change the way you practice and perform. I've been putting it through its paces, and I'm ready to give you the straight scoop in this review. Is it worth the hype? Let's dive in!
First Impressions & Design
Right out of the box, the Soundbrenner Core 2 makes a great impression. It's incredibly lightweight at just 34 grams (1.2 ounces), so you barely notice it on your wrist. The rubber strap with its plastic buckle is comfortable and easily adjusts to wrists up to 8.5 inches, fitting securely. The 22mm width strap attaches to the lugs, meeting the 45mm polycarbonate body. At only 13mm thick, it slips easily under a sleeve, feeling much like a sporty Android watch.
Controlling the Core 2 is intuitive, thanks to its two side buttons and an aluminum click wheel. The larger button moves you forward through options, while the smaller one takes you back. It's a simple, effective interface.
Key Features: More Than Just a Metronome
The Core 2 packs a surprising amount of functionality into its compact design. Here's a breakdown of its core features:
Practice Tracker: This is a fantastic addition. You can set goals and track your practice sessions directly on the device, with all the data syncing seamlessly to the app. It's a brilliant way to monitor your progress and stay motivated.
Vibrating Metronome: This is the star of the show. The Core 2 delivers a powerful haptic pulse directly to your wrist, allowing you to feel the beat rather than just hear it. You can adjust the tempo with the click wheel, change time signatures, and even set subdivisions and varying intensities for individual beats – perfect for accenting. The double-tap feature to start/stop the metronome is super convenient, and you can also tap out a tempo to set it instantly.
Tuner: A built-in tuner is always a welcome feature. I found it to be accurate, with clear visual indications (green for in tune, yellow/red for off) that make tuning quick and easy.
DB Meter: Concerned about your hearing? The Core 2 includes a decibel meter, which is a nice bonus. While it can be sensitive in a live setting (like an Apple Watch), it's a helpful tool for keeping an eye on overall volume levels during practice.
Smartwatch Functionality: Beyond its music-specific features, the Core 2 acts as a regular smartwatch. It displays notifications from your phone via Bluetooth and features a flick-to-wake screen, which helps conserve battery.
Battery Life: Impressive Endurance
Battery life is always a concern with wearables, and the Core 2 doesn't disappoint. Used purely as a smartwatch, you're looking at an amazing four days plus of battery life. When the metronome's powerful vibration is constantly engaged, it naturally drains faster, but I still got close to three and a half to four hours of continuous vibration time. For most practice sessions or gigs, that's more than enough. Just remember to top it up if you're planning back-to-back long performances with constant vibration.
Live Performance vs. Practice Partner: Where it Shines
My initial thought was that the Core 2 would be a game-changer for live performance, and while it can work, it truly excels as a practice friend.
For Practice: This device is brilliant. Being able to feel the metronome on your wrist instead of relying solely on an auditory click is a completely different, and often more effective, experience. The ability to store practice hours is also invaluable for tracking your progress. I genuinely wish I had this in college!
For Live Performance: If your band has a rigid, pre-set list, the Core 2 is fantastic. You can program your setlist in the app, and with a quick tap, the next song's BPM is loaded, ready to go. This seamless transition is incredibly useful.
However, if your band is more improvisational or changes setlists on the fly, you might encounter some "stumbling blocks." Constantly adjusting the tempo on the watch mid-song or between unpredictable changes isn't practical. I also found that when tapping in a tempo, especially in a live, high-energy environment, it's possible to tap on an offbeat, causing the metronome to be slightly out of sync. While you can usually correct it, it's a minor inconvenience.
The App: Unlocking the Core 2's Full Potential
This is where the Soundbrenner Core 2 truly comes alive, especially for live use. The companion app allows you to:
Create and manage setlists: This is the key feature for live musicians with consistent setlists. Program each song's BPM and simply load them from the app with a tap. This eliminates the need for manual tempo changes on the watch, making transitions smooth and fast.
Track practice data: All your practice sessions and goals are stored and visualized in the app, giving you a clear overview of your progress.
Customize settings: Fine-tune vibration intensity, LED brightness, and other preferences for an optimal experience.
A Different Experience: The Learning Curve
There's no doubt there's a learning curve to using the Core 2. If you're used to traditional audio clicks, feeling the beat through haptic feedback is a distinct experience. I believe some prior experience with an audio click helps, but once you get a feel for it, it's incredibly fun and engaging.
One small note for drummers: while the vibration is strong, the constant vibrations from playing drums can sometimes slightly dull the sensation. Guitarists and keyboard players, or other musicians with less physical vibration coming through their instruments, might feel the pulse even more prominently.
Final Thoughts: A Cool Piece of Kit
The Soundbrenner Core 2 is a very cool piece of kit. It's genuinely class for practicing, a tool I wholeheartedly wish I had during my college days. For tracking practice, feeling the beat, and its integrated features, it's a standout. For live gigs, it's brilliant for bands with set setlists, though it can present minor challenges for more spontaneous performances.
This isn't just for drummers! Guitarists, keyboard players, and any musician looking for a unique and effective way to internalize tempo will find immense value in the Soundbrenner Core 2.
